(21 Jun 2024)
According to the latest data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), there are
38,525 individuals currently held in detention, an increase of about 1,000 detainees from the
numbers released in early June of this year and nearly 9,000 more than the numbers reported
in June of 2023. ICE was reported as the arresting agency for 33 percent of current detainees
with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) named the arresting agency for the other 67 percent.
While the ICE Area of Responsibility (AOR) in San Francisco remains home to the largest
enrollment of people on Alternatives to Detention (ATD), the Chicago AOR’s ATD population has
increased significantly and is now second in the nation. San Francisco’s ATD enrollment has
dropped slightly from 18,765 to 18,337 since the beginning of fiscal year 2024 while Chicago
ATD enrollment has increased by more than 4,000, from 13,882 to 18,119. More than 80
percent of ATD enrollees in Chicago are monitored by the SmartLink GPS monitoring app.
However, Chicago joined other AORs in utilizing VeriWatch, a wristworn device that has surged
to become the third-most utilized monitoring
technology in the one year since
introduction. In
March 2024, VeriWatch had yet to be introduced in Chicago. But now the ICE office in Chicago
monitors 75 individuals via the device.
