According to the latest data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the
largest number of immigrants monitored through the Alternatives to Detention (ATD)
program—18,478 in total—are monitored out of the ICE office in Chicago, Illinois. This includes immigrants
who live in Chicago, as well as immigrants who live in the much larger region of ICE Chicago’s
Area of Responsibility, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Kansas, and
Missouri. This increase is in line with
TRAC’s most recent observations that
ATD numbers in ICE’s Chicago office were on their way up two weeks ago.
In total, ICE monitors 179,761 immigrants on ATD, down overall from around 194,000 at the end
of fiscal year 2023. The number of people monitored by SmartLINK is now 152,692, the most
used technology, ankle monitor usage is at 19,031 nationwide, and VoiceID is now at 2,763. The
ATD technology that continues to grow is ICE’s wrist worn GPS watches called VeriWatch that
now stands at 4,557 nationwide, up from 4,164 two weeks ago.
Highlights from data updated in TRAC's Detention Quick Facts tool show that:

Immigration and Customs Enforcement held 37,509 in ICE detention according to data
current as of June 30, 2024.

22,997 out of 37,509—or 61.3%—held in ICE detention have no criminal record,
according to data current as of June 30, 2024. Many more have only minor offenses,
including traffic violations.

ICE relied on detention facilities in Texas to house the most people during FY 2024,
according to data current as of June 10, 2024.

ICE arrested 8,450 and CBP arrested 20,127 of the 28,577 people booked into detention
by ICE during May 2024.

South Texas Fam Residential Center in Dilley, Texas held the largest number of ICE
detainees so far in FY 2024, averaging 1,784 per day (as of June 2024).
