The latest case-by-case data from the Justice Department show that in December 2014 there were 90 new prosecutions for government regulatory matters, fewer than in any month since October 1998.
The data were collected from federal prosecutors by the Executive Office for United States Attorneys and obtained by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse under the Freedom of Information Act.
Counterfeiting and forgery cases accounted for 26.7 percent of these prosecutions, with the remaining cases falling under various categories including other regulatory offenses (35.6%), non-drug related money laundering (16.7%), customs and currency violations (8.9%) and drug-related money laundering (4.4%).
