The number of lawsuits filed challenging federal secrecy over records has declined significantly in recent years, according to a new study by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.
The study authors said this was not because there was less government secrecy. There were more Freedom of Information Act court challenges filed by individuals and non-media organizations than in previous years.
The study attributed the decrease in FOIA filings by media organizations to the slashing of newsroom staff and budgets that has taken place around the country.
