Patent-related lawsuits have more than doubled in frequency in the last three years, researchers reported Tuesday.
A total of 530 new patent suits were filed last month nationwide, roughly 50 percent more than in January of 2012 and two and a half times as many as in January of 2010, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which tracks several categories of civil and criminal cases in federal courts.
The January number wasn’t an aberration; the number of patent cases has topped 500 in five of the last six months, compared to just once in the preceding five years, by TRAC’s count.
