Gideon v. Wainwright and the Right to Counsel in Immigration Removal Cases: An Immigration Gideon?

Because an unrepresented immigrant requires more judicial time and effort than a represented one, providing counsel to noncitizens in removal proceedings would help the immigration courts more expeditiously and efficiently dispose of cases. The provision of counsel, in turn, might help the beleaguered immigration courts reduce their backlog of cases.....[citing TRAC research].
