Despite the list of cases U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag touts as signs of success in the Northern District of California, by one measure white-collar actions are down. There was a 2.4 percent drop in the number of defendants charged during fiscal 2011, Haag's first full year on the job, dipping to 160 defendants, according to Justice Department data analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. The decrease came as the office increased filings overall, resulting in a 3.8 percent increase for that year, according to the Syracuse numbers. And the white-collar drop bucks the national trend, as white-collar filings were up 4.5 percent nationwide.
