Obama falls far short on vow of transparency

Regarding governmental secrecy, Richard Lardner of The Associated Press was on target when he said, “Old habits die hard.” Barack Obama took office pledging more transparency in government. The record has not matched the rhetoric. A Freedom of Information Act provision that allows the government to conceal details of internal decision-making was invoked more often under Obama in 2009 than under George W. Bush in 2008. In 2009, Holder issued rules making it harder for agencies to deny FOIA requests, but there is “little evidence that these new standards are actually being followed,” says the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a nonpartisan research group.
