FOIA Delays: Government foot-dragging limits public’s right to know

Public servants who believe in a citizen’s right to know work against a powerful institutional bias toward inertia, nondisclosure and secrecy. A few lawsuits or prosecutions for capricious defiance of the law might help.
The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University has been awarded $55,750 by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation in Oklahoma City to study FOIA noncompliance. Meanwhile, a new computer system might allow FOIA requests to be traced like UPS packages. That could identify bottlenecks and apply more pressure to remove them and improve the proper flow of information from government to its citizens.
