A recent study from Syracuse University has shed light on the chaotic situation in US immigration courts, particularly in Florida, where more than 1.3 million people are anxiously awaiting the decision of an immigration judge. The state is facing a critical level of cases, with over three and a half million cases waiting to be heard.
Of the cases pending, more than one million are formal asylum applications, highlighting the urgency of the crisis at hand. The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) revealed these staggering numbers, emphasizing the magnitude of the issue.
Miami-Dade County is at the epicenter of this tension, hosting the largest concentration of immigrants with deportation proceedings pending in court. Hondurans are the most affected nationality, with the highest number of expulsion orders. Shockingly, only 13.9% of those facing deportation had legal representation at the time of receiving their orders in April 2024.
Immigration judges have held 15,548 bail hearings so far in fiscal year 2024, but only 4,644 have been granted this appeal, underscoring the challenges faced by migrants seeking a safe future in the United States.
