The number of pending immigration cases in the U.S. broke 1 million in 2019, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC, a research center at Syracuse University. The data shows the backlog has more than tripled over the last five years, reaching 3.4 million pending cases in 2024.
According to TRAC, Massachusetts has 154,044 unresolved immigration cases as of this year, which is the seventh-highest total among states nationwide, behind Florida, Texas, California, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey. That number is a far cry from a decade ago, when Massachusetts had 10,678 pending cases.
