The U.S. immigration court backlog has grown to over 3 million cases, up from 1.9 million cases in September of 2022.
According to research from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), Florida has the largest backlog at 481,376 cases. Texas is the second largest at 458,376. Together, the two make up nearly one-third of the cases.
California, New York and Illinois are also at the top of the list.
For context, there are now more immigrants with a pending case in the U.S. than residents living in Chicago, which is the third largest city in the U.S.
