Major demographic shift in immigration court backlog: Venezuelans now lead
By Robert Holguin

Frankly we're not having a conversation about why are the courts the place where asylum seekers go," said Austin Kocher, a researcher with the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

In the ongoing saga of the U.S. immigration court backlog, a significant demographic shift has emerged, with Venezuelans surpassing Mexicans as the nationality with the most pending court cases. The latest data from researchers at Syracuse University reveals that Venezuelans now approach 500,000 pending cases, marking a substantial increase from the approximately 1,500 cases in 2017. The immigration court system grapples with unprecedented challenges as the backlog surpasses three million cases, with each judge facing an average of around 4,500 pending cases. However, this shift has not only intensified the need for more immigration judges but has also exposed a shortage of immigration attorneys, leading to a decline in representation rates from 65% to 30%, according to Syracuse researchers.
