Recent data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a data research organization at Syracuse University, shows the number of migrants kept in federal detention reached its highest level this July, with 31,064 noncitizens counted at U.S. facilities.
Under the Trump administration, detentions exceeded 55,600 in 2019. During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, that number dropped to below 30,000 by late April.
According to the organization, nearly one-third of all detainees are being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Texas. The remainder are held by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.
