Since 2019, over 71,000 people seeking asylum have been expelled to Mexico under the
Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), a policy implemented by the Trump Administration and
continued under the Biden Administration that forced migrants seeking asylum in the United
States to remain in Mexico for the entire duration of their asylum proceedings which often last
years (TRAC 2022).
