The number of migrants facing criminal consequences for entering the country illegally is going up, according to a new report from Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, also known as TRAC immigration, at Syracuse University.
The report specifically shows an increase in criminal referrals for unlawful entry into the country and unlawful re-entry.
“We found that within the last month or two those number of prosecutions actually gone up, which is a signal that things may be changing at the border," said Austin Kocher, a research assistant professor with TRAC at Syracuse University.
According to the data compiled by researchers at TRAC, 2,015 people were referred for criminal prosecution in April of 2022. That is up 31% when compared to April of last year when there was a total of 1,537 criminal referrals from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
