Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University conducted a analysis of the latest IRS statistics covering federal income tax audits through February 2022. The data reveals that the agency targets audits primarily at lower-income taxpayers.
The analysis found that taxpayers with incomes of less than $25,000 are six times more likely to be audited by the tax agency. Through February, the IRS has completed 132,922 audits of taxpayers with an AGI of less than $25,000. Last year, by February, 105,978 had been made.
