Amid the pandemic, federal prosecutors in northern Ohio filed record number of criminal cases
By John Caniglia

Federal prosecutors in northern Ohio filed more criminal cases last year than they had in any of the previous 30 years, despite the coronavirus pandemic that slowed courts across the country. Prosecutors brought charges in 846 cases in 2021. Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer looked at data from the past 30 years to compare and found the number of indictments has nearly doubled since 1991, according to the records.During a year when some courtrooms were closed and judges handled most hearings virtually, federal grand juries in the region continued to file indictments. Most of the new filings in the region involved drug and weapons charges, records show. The increase appears to oppose a national trend. Data collected by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which tracks federal cases, indicate that prosecutions across the country dropped dramatically during the pandemic.
