Return of the 'Remain in Mexico' asylum program revives Trump-era border policy
By Lauren Villagran

Roughly 71,000 people were enrolled in MPP during the Trump administration, according to government data collected by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. Of the more than 45,000 cases adjudicated, 740 people won relief — a success rate of 1.6%, compared with about 30% in normal asylum proceedings, according to TRAC data.More than 28,000 cases ended with an "in absentia" removal order after migrants didn't show up for a hearing, underscoring the difficulty for some migrants of waiting in a Mexican border city for months.
