Exodus from Michoacan: Lime orchard workers flee Mexico cartel violence seeking asylum

Over the past 20 years, roughly 42,000 Mexican nationals have sought asylum in the U.S., according to data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. Immigration judges denied asylum or other relief in more than 35,000 cases, a denial rate of 85%. Chinese applicants face an asylum denial rate of about 33%, while asylum seekers from El Salvador can expect a denial rate of 80% and Guatemalans about 82%.
