Essay: He asked for asylum. We gave him hell in a pandemic ‘petri dish’
By Luis Carrasco

The Trump administration has sought to cast immigrants as criminals, as troublemakers the second they set foot on American soil, but most detainees have no criminal record. In March, more than 60 percent of people in ICE custody had no conviction, not even for a petty offense, according to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. Many others aren’t even accused of violating immigration rules. They are being held while their asylum claims — a legal process recognized by international and U.S. law to protect people fleeing persecution — go through the immigration system.
