Federal authorities are ratcheting up pressure against citizens who provide sanctuary or other forms of help to undocumented immigrants, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University.
The number of prosecutions for “harboring aliens” in February—504—was the highest monthly total in the previous decade. February was the latest month for which figures were available, but it indicated that the use of such tactics was continuing to climb, TRAC said.
Records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act showed “harboring” prosecutions reached an “all-time high” of 5,700 in 2019, up from 4,500 the previous year.
