There are more than 855,000 pending immigration court cases in the United States, which is an all-time high, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), a nonprofit data research center at Syracuse University, which has been keeping record of pending immigration court cases for the last decade.
TRAC co-director Susan Long said the avalanche of cases has been accumulating for over a decade. The backlog worsened, she said, during the government shutdown earlier this year. “It’s an accelerating trend,” Long said. “It just keeps going up, and that’s an indication that there just isn’t enough resources there.”
