Although the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history ended last week, the impact will continue to ripple through the immigration courts. Ibarra doesn’t have a court date yet for the initial hearing to schedule the trial for his asylum case
During the 35-day shutdown, immigration courts canceled a majority of hearings, adding to the nationwide backlog that topped over 800,000 cases as of Nov. 30, according to Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.
