Nicaraguan doctor flees political turmoil after defying orders not to treat protesters, faces uncertain future

Although the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history ended last week, the impact will continue to ripple through the immigration courts. Ibarra doesn’t have a court date yet for the initial hearing to schedule the trial for his asylum case During the 35-day shutdown, immigration courts canceled a majority of hearings, adding to the nationwide backlog that topped over 800,000 cases as of Nov. 30, according to Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.
