As of Jan. 18, about 63,000 immigration court hearings nationwide have been canceled because of the shutdown. The backlog in the immigration courts had already grown to 800,000 cases for 2019 with hearings being scheduled three years out.
If the standoff lasts until Feb. 1, 1,140 hearings in Ohio and another 981 in Kentucky will be canceled, according to Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University. Nationally, 108,000 cases will have had hearings canceled.
