The Trump administration came to that new interpretation of the repatriation agreement in the spring of 2017, which it has since used to increase deportations of certain Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian immigrants, including U.S. permanent residents, who have criminal histories, according to the letter, which cited multiple media reports.
According to data published by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, the U.S. ordered 375 immigrants from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia deported in fiscal year 2018. In fiscal years 2017 and 2016, 305 immigrants and 314 immigrants from those three countries were ordered removed, respectively, according to TRAC.
