In fiscal year 2017, U.S. immigration courts ruled on more than 30,100 cases, and 61.8 percent of requests were denied, data obtained by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University in Nov. 2017 reveals. According to the research, Mexico had the highest denial rate — 88 percent — out of 10 nationalities who applied for asylum from fiscal 2012 through 2017. Ethiopians had the highest success rate, with only 17 percent of asylum applicants being denied, the institution reports.
