Granted asylum, N.J. teacher is released from detention

Last year, about 30,000 people sought asylum in the United States, up from 20,000 in 2016, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which tracks immigration statistics. Though asylum grants increased in 2017, denials grew faster, making the denial rate 62 percent, up from 45 percent in 2012, the center found.
