Without legal representation, migrants face long odds on immigration, asylum claims
By Dianna M. Nez

The number of immigrants seeking asylum who are unable to secure legal representation has spiked in the past 10 years. In fiscal year 2017, 20.6 percent of asylum seekers didn't have representation, compared with 13.6 percent in 2007, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC, a data-research organization at Syracuse University. TRAC also found that while only one out of every 10 asylum seekers without representation wins their case, nearly half with representation are successful.
