It’s rare, but an asylum-seeker’s fate varies by judge, data suggest.
The Justice Department operates immigration courts in seven cities across the state. Asylum denial rates are high in four major cities, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.
In Dallas, judges denied 69.8 to 93.8 percent of asylum applications between fiscal years 2012 and 2017, according to the clearinghouse. Judges in El Paso denied applications in 94.6 to 98.8 percent of cases. In Houston, judges denied 71.8 to 97 percent of applications. In San Antonio, denial rates were 24.9 to 97.7 percent.
