After '17 immigration scare, 19-year-old puts down roots in state
By Eric Besson

Asylum seekers already faced a steep climb, data show. Immigration court denial rates climbed from 44.5 percent to 61.8 percent in the five-year period ended in fiscal 2017, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. More than 30,000 asylum cases were decided last year, the most since 2005, according to the research center. People who seek asylum may file first with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and then go to court if that decision is not in their favor. The agency approved 47 percent of 40,000 cases in fiscal 2016, according to a federal report.
