To fulfill Trump’s vision on immigration, sheriffs are trampling over constitutional principles
By Yvette Cabera

In the final years of the Obama administration, ICE began reducing its use of detainers, according to data obtained by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse [TRAC], a data gathering research center at Syracuse University. But under the Trump administration, ICE’s use of detainers — with an ICE “warrant” or alone — to prolong jail time for suspected undocumented immigrants has jumped significantly, according to the most recent national statistics. The number of detainers issued by ICE officers increased by 81 percent this year. ICE issued 112,493 detainers from January 20 to Sept. 30, 2017, compared to 62,192 during the same period last year.
