New York is not a safe haven,' warns new Buffalo head of ICE
By Phil Fairbanks

ICE claims 83 percent of the individuals it arrested upstate are undocumented immigrants with prior criminal convictions. The local ICE office covers 48 counties. In contrast, the latest numbers on new deportation filings in the region 's two immigration courts – Batavia and Buffalo – indicate 90 percent of the 1,482 new court cases involve non-criminal immigration violators. The deportation data, which covers an 11-month period ending Sept. 1, comes from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a data-gathering organization at Syracuse University. The organization also tracked where the newly arrested immigrants are from and found the largest number came from Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.
