Stewart Detention Center, operated by Corrections Corporation of America, is one of the largest, busiest immigration prisons in the country. Located a couple of hours south of Atlanta in Lumpkin, the federal immigration court there heard 35 percent of the 9,442 deportation cases handled by Georgia immigration courts last year. (The state's other immigration court in Atlanta also handles cases for Alabama.)
The Stewart court is also one of the harshest in the nation. It deported 89 percent of petitioners, compared with a national removal rate of 44.6 percent last year, according to Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which tracks national immigration court data.
