Not quite a sanctuary city: Madison officers, undocumented immigrants have a complicated relationship
By Abigail Becker

According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse Immigration Project, ICE detainers in Wisconsin decreased from 1,002 in 2014 to 566 in 2015. The number of ICE detainers in Dane County also dropped in the same time frame from 109 to 48. Mahoney said he has declined to participate in ICE “round-ups” or use the jail as a holding facility like Dodge and Kenosha Counties have. Those counties contract with the federal government to house prisoners on immigration detainers. “We don't go out and enforce immigration law,” Mahoney said. “We don’t go out and look for individuals who are undocumented nor do we make it an issue in a traffic stop.”
