In May, the Associated Press found that Shelby County Schools was among at least 35 districts in 14 states in which hundreds of unaccompanied minors from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras had been discouraged from enrolling in school or pressured into what advocates and attorneys argue are separate but unequal alternative programs.
It is unclear how many children were turned away from enrolling in Shelby County Schools, but between 2014 and 2016, about 2,352 unaccompanied minors relocated to the Memphis region, according to the database maintained by Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC, which monitors immigration courts.
