Hispanic heritage honoree hopes to build bridges
By Ulysses Díaz

Between 2012 and 2013, 33 people were arrested by the Aurora Police Department and detained for ICE, according to figures published by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. This independent, nonpartisan source for federal government information is found at www.trac.syr.edu/immigration/reports/343/include/table3.html. Let's take a closer look at the numbers and see what actually happened. Of those 33 arrests, just one person was eventually handed a level 1 conviction, the most serious federal conviction for a crime. Eleven were handed level 3 convictions, and 21 people were not convicted. This means 64 percent of Aurora arrestees handed over to ICE from 2012 to 2013 were convicted of no federal crime whatsoever.
