The immigration system is complicated, and having an attorney representing a potential deportee may be the single most important factor in determining the outcome of such hearings, according to data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a nonpartisan research project supported by Syracuse University.
Families facing deportation are 14 times as likely to win their case and be allowed to stay in the United States if they have access to legal counsel after passing initial "credible fear" screenings, TRAC found.
Meanwhile, immigration courts are overwhelmed with the number of cases.
