Many of the Central Americans fled violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras and haven’t been represented by attorneys in federal immigration court, Brané said. An asylum case in which the immigrant fears persecution is complex and attorneys are needed in the process, Brané said.
Only about a quarter of those in family units, usually headed by a mother, had attorneys in federal immigration courts, which significantly helped them obtain rulings allowing them to stay in the U.S., according to a report of about 26,000 cases by the Syracuse-based organization called Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC.
