The statements of President Obama last week on needing more gun laws and control defies logic.
Syracuse University, a top-rated institution, researched federal prosecutions for gun crime. Published in 2013, using 2011 statistics, the most recent figures available from the U.S. Department of Justice, the study found the Obama Administration prosecuted gun crimes 28 percent lower than the Bush Administration.
Further, in the first quarter of 2011, there were only 484 gun crime prosecutions across the U.S., the lowest level since 2001 as revealed by a Freedom of Information Act request to review the U.S. Attorney’s Executive Office Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Additionally, TRAC revealed that major cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Atlanta had far fewer federal gun crime prosecutions than smaller regions. One bit of good news, the U.S. Attorney for St Louis had a higher rate for prosecutions and was ranked sixth in the nation.
Syracuse University reported there are 10 federal laws, The United States Code, Titles 18 and 22 (criminal statutes) available in the Department of Justice’s arsenal to aggressively prosecute existing law. The Lautenberg Amendment, passed in 1996 is one of the toughest federal gun crime laws which prohibits those convicted of domestic abuse from possessing firearms.
Again, the scholars stated that under the Obama Administration, federal gun prosecutions are the lowest since 2001. President Obama, we don’t need you to talk the talk, we need you to walk the walk. Enough tiresome rhetoric already.
