Data from ICE analyzed by TRAC shows that only 12 percent of all deportees had committed a serious crime. The agency developed its definition of serious crime — burglary, drug offenses, sexual assault — to identify individuals who pose a threat to public safety or national security. In contrast, however, the charges for 45 percent of deportees were as minor as a traffic citation or overstaying a visa, and 43 percent had not committed a crime at all. Considering the small threat that the vast majority of asylum-seekers pose to national security, wouldn't our resources be better used on other problems such as crime or poverty?
