Detentions of immigrants in the United States fell 39 percent between the end of Fiscal Year 2012 and 2014, according to data compiled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and included in a study published Wednesday by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC, research center.
In the 18 months between October 2012 and March 2014, ICE detained about 9,000 people per month.
The results are based on the number of detentions as per ICE detention orders obtained by TRAC, which is affiliated with Syracuse University, under the Freedom of Information Act.
TRAC reported during fiscal 2012 that ICE issued more than 250,000 detention orders, an average of more than 22,800 per month.
