Busiest Judges Are Presiding Over Thousands of Cases
By Amanda Bronstad

The busiest federal judges in the country are overseeing multidistrict litigation, prisoner petitions and patent cases, according to a report released Thursday. Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) compiled data for the first time on case-management trends in the federal district courts. A previous TRAC report drawing upon the same data found that criminal and civil filings in federal courts nationwide continued to outpace the appointment of new judges. “We look at trying to provide detailed information about our federal government and what it’s actually doing day to day, and the judiciary is an important branch of the government,” said Susan Long, co-director of TRAC. Both reports focused primarily on data in the 12 months before June 30, although TRAC plans quarterly updates.
