The Justice Department made the correct decision in assigning a new immigration judge to replace Judge Dietrich Sims on Dallas-area asylum and immigration cases involving minors. Sims has one of the worst records among all immigration court judges in the country when it comes to orders for removal — the legal term for deportation. His denial rate in asylum cases is 83.5 percent, far higher than the nationwide average of 51 percent, according to Syracuse-based Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. Sims has taken such an unyielding stand in favor of removal that he has even ordered it when the government prosecutor has asked for court compassion and leniency. Sims’ replacement, Michael Baird, who has a much more balanced record, will handle his juvenile cases.
