Kristin Olmundson, a Bloomington-based federal immigration judge has reportedly denied three of every four asylum requests in at least the past five years. The national average is 50 percent, according to Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank that monitors federal enforcement, staffing and spending. Immigration lawyers, contrary to public perception, are not independent jurists but employees of the U.S. Justice Department, the same agency that asylum seekers must challenge in court if they lose their cases.
Olmundson also ranks 65th out of the 273 immigration judges in terms of rejecting asylum requests, according to TRAC.
