One need is a robust policy for dealing with refugees of the war in Mexico. Half of the 230,000 people who have been displaced from Mexico because of drug war violence have sought refuge in the United States, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (2010). Between January and April 2009, 896 citizens applied for asylum, compared to 586 in 2006 when the war was just beginning(Bensman 2009). Yet judges denied 50 percent of asylum applications from Mexico
between 2008 and 2010......[Citing TRAC research].
