New Attorney General by the Numbers
By Adam Liptak

After former Attorney General Gonzales' forced resignation last summer, President Bush nominated Michael B. Mukasey to replace him. But what actually was known about Mukasey who for 18 years had been a busy federal judge in the Southern District of New York? With the confirmation hearing looming, reporter Adam Liptak began to investigate. One of his sources was the unique judge-by-judge information only available in TRAC's subscription service, TRACFED. The data cited by Liptak documented that the median prison sentence imposed by Mukasey was 24 months, far longer than the 18 months of the 70 other federal judges in the district. The data also showed his white collar crime sentences were double that of his colleagues.
