Dayton Daily News
December 10, 2000

As a result of an extensive investigation, three Dayton Daily News reporters presented their readers with a carefully documented front-page article asserting that Ohio's lax gun laws made the state a haven for criminals who can't get their guns elsewhere. Reporters Mike Wagner, Lou Greico and David Gulliver based many of their findings on extensive interviews and analysis of databases maintained by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. But when it came to determining how well or poorly the federal government was enforcing the gun laws in Ohio and the nation as a whole, they relied on data drawn from TRAC. With ATF referrals for prosecution to the two U.S. Attorneys in Ohio among or near the bottom third in the nation, the reporters argued that this record was poor. The investigation also ran on the Cox News Service.
