Using The Tool

Published Feb 4, 2019

Switching Among Tabs. This tool has three tabs allowing users to switch among views to examine details about Immigration Court bond hearings or focus on the case hearings for these same immigrants. In the flow chart below, the diagram's shading highlights the particular matters covered in the "Bond Hearing" view [light tan] versus the "Case Hearing" view [darker tan]. The selection of the "Advanced" view allows the user to view all details about all bond and all case hearings together.

The flow chart also diagrams the time sequence between these two hearing types. Usually the bond hearing occurs before the case is heard, but occasionally the case is decided by an immigration judge and then a bond hearing occurs if the immigrant continues to be detained. Sometimes only a bond hearing is held when the court's jurisdiction for that individual is limited to hearing custody matters.

Working with the Chart and Table Options

In the top half of the app are a number of radial buttons. These also allow you to control what you view.

Measures: For the bond hearing and advanced tabs you can display either counts or the median bond granted in the chart and tables. With the case hearing tab only the case count option is shown.

Chart. You can select whether you want the bars in the time series graph to represent the month or the fiscal year in which the bond hearing was held using the radial buttons to the left of the chart. Mousing over a bar in the chart displays its value for the given month or fiscal year.

By selecting either the number or percent radial button to the right of the graph, you can select whether the graph displays counts or percentages. When the median bond amount has been selected, the percent option does not apply.

Three Tables. There are three tables below the chart. You should work from left to right as these tables are interconnected to allow you to "drill in." That is, if you click on a row in the left hand table, only those cases in that row category will be displayed in the middle table. If you then click on a row in the middle table, only those cases in the selected row are displayed in the right-hand table.

Above each table is a pull-down menu allowing you to select what characteristics (dimension) you want to display in that table. See About the Data for a list of these dimensions.

How the Tables and Chart Interconnect. Your table selections also control what characteristic (dimension and row category) is displayed in the chart above. The row in the table you last click on controls what is displayed in the chart. Note that if you are displaying "percent" in the chart, the percent graphed is the percentage that the row category selected is of the total ("All") in that particular table. Caution: 100 percent will be displayed in the chart when the total ("All") was the category you have currently selected.
