One Year After Hurricane Laura, Louisiana Plaintiffs Rush to Meet One-Year Insurance Filing Deadline in Federal Court
(17 Sep 2021) In August 2021, a total of 774 civil insurance lawsuits were filed in federal court in the Western District of Louisiana. Most of them—706—were filed in Lake Charles, a community devastated by Hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020 as well as by flooding, ice storms, and the COVID-19 over the past year. See more...
Decline in the Number of People Held in Detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
(14 Sep 2021) According to new data available in an TRAC new easy-to-read 'Quick Facts' tools, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is holding 23,014 immigrants in detention, down from more than 27,000 reported in early July. The overall number is down even though the number of people booked into detention centers actually increased in August to nearly 30,000, up from as low as 7,000 in February. Immigration Court Struggling to Manage Its Expanding Dedicated Docket of Asylum-Seeking Families
(13 Sep 2021) During the month of August, the Biden administration stepped up the assignment of asylum-seeking families arriving at the border to the Immigration Court's new "Dedicated Docket" program. As of August 31, 2021, Immigration Court records indicate that a total of 16,713 individuals comprising approximately 6,000 families are now assigned to this program. See more...
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Now Monitors About 118,000 Immigrants Through Its Alternatives to Detention Program
(02 Sep 2021) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is monitoring record numbers of immigrants through its "Alternatives to Detention" programs that rely on GPS monitors, smartphone technology, and telephonic reporting to monitor immigrants awaiting the outcome of their deportation cases. According to data updated today by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse in its 'Quick Facts' tools, a total of 117,682 people are currently enrolled in Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Alternatives to Detention program, up from about 87,000 a year ago at the end of August 2020. Tax Lawsuits Half Levels of a Decade Ago
(31 Aug 2021) The number of civil tax lawsuits filed in federal court remains steady, but are only half the number of a decade ago according to data analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), a research institute at Syracuse University. This decline is likely due to severe funding and staffing cuts imposed on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by Congress which has caused a sharp reduction in IRS audits and collection enforcement.
